Townley Road Landscape and Public Realm Improvements

Townley Road in Bexleyheath is an important route and transport hub, linking residential areas to the town centre. However, it currently experiences issues such as a cluttered layout, conflicts between pedestrians and buses, and unauthorised parking. These issues reduce the safety and accessibility of the area.
We are proposing improvements to create a safer, more attractive space with improved accessibility.
The project aims to:
- Improve movement and accessibility by prioritising walking and cycling, while maintaining essential access where needed
- Enhance the safety of the area
- Strengthen wayfinding and connectivity through improved signage and clearer links to the wider town centre
- Support activity and social interaction by providing seating and flexible spaces
- Ensure long-term value through the use of high-quality, durable materials
- Improve sustainability, through measures such as tree planting, sustainable urban drainage schemes (SuDS), and biodiversity improvements
- Promote inclusive engagement by involving local communities through co-design and consultation.
Specific features of the proposed design include:
- Partial pedestrianisation and shared-use paths
- Traffic calming measures to reduce vehicle speeds
- Step-free bus stops, dropped kerbs, continuous and wider footways, and other accessibility improvements
- Working with TFL on potential enhancements to the transport infrastructure, such as better bus facilities
- Sustainable urban drainage schemes
- Planting and greenery for biodiversity and cooling
- Seating and other high-quality public realm improvements.
This project has been on hold since 2023 as additional funding was sought to progress the scheme. With funding now secured, the project has resumed - so we're looking for your thoughts and input to inform how we design the new and improved road.
