Consultation on Proposed Bus Lanes - Yarnton Way, Abbey Wood
The London Borough of Bexley is consulting on proposal to introduce new bus lanes and associated bus stop improvements along sections of Yarnton Way, Abbey Wood, and to invite your views on the proposal.
We are inviting residents, businesses or organisations located close to the proposed scheme to comment. Feedback received during the consultation will help inform the development of the design and the Council’s decision on whether the proposal should proceed.
What is proposed?
The Council is proposing to introduce bus lanes along sections of Yarnton Way corridor, together with several new bus shelters. A plan showing the proposed layout is enclosed with this letter.
The proposed bus lanes would operate during weekday peak periods only:
- 7:00am to 10:00am, Monday to Friday
- 4:00pm to 7:00pm, Monday to Friday
Outside these hours the bus lanes would not be in operation and could be used by general traffic. Where kerbside parking is currently available, this would also be permitted outside the operational hours.
Why is the Council proposing this scheme?
The proposal aims to improve and protect the reliability and efficiency of local bus services along Yarnton Way, particularly during peak periods when traffic congestion can cause delays and affect journey times.
The scheme seeks to:
- Improve and protect the reliability and efficiency of local bus services;
- Encourage greater use of public transport;
- Improve accessibility to bus stops;
- Improve and protect journey time reliability;
- Support sustainable travel choices; and
- Help deliver local and regional transport policy objectives.
The proposal supports the objectives of the Mayor's Transport Strategy by improving the reliability and efficiency of bus services, encouraging greater use of public transport, and supporting more sustainable travel choices. It also aligns with the London Borough of Bexley's Third Local Implementation Plan (LIP3), which aims to improve public transport connectivity and accessibility, increase the use of sustainable modes of travel, and deliver bus priority on suitable corridors across the borough.

Next steps
Following the consultation, the Council will review all responses and consider whether any changes should be made to the proposal before determining how to proceed. Residents, business and other stakeholders will be informed of the outcome of the consultation.
Subject to the outcome of the consultation and any necessary approvals, the Council currently anticipates implementing the scheme Summer 2027.
