Is there any particular reason why you don't follow the police on social media?

Most respondents said they do not follow Bexley Police on social media because they were unaware that the police had social media accounts or did not know the usernames to find them. A few mentioned they had simply not thought about it or had never come across the accounts. One respondent noted that the police accounts have little or no activity, suggesting more frequent posting is needed to encourage engagement. Another said they get enough information from other platforms like Nextdoor and one does not use the social media platforms the police are on. Overall, lack of awareness is the main barrier, with some also citing low activity or preference for other sources.

Thinking about Bexley Police social media, what would you like to see more of?

Respondents most frequently requested more information about local news, events, and crime updates, including details on what is happening in their area and police responses. There is a strong desire for increased awareness of crime in local neighbourhoods and reports of all crimes. Many also want updates on police operations, foot patrols, and visible police presence in the community.

Several respondents asked for more preventative advice, general safety information, and practical steps being taken to address issues. There is also interest in positive stories about police engagement with residents and good news.

A few respondents expressed frustration with social media itself, either wanting to see more police presence in real life rather than online or noting that social media algorithms prevent them from seeing posts.

Other suggestions included more information on how to contact local police stories relating to ward priorities and updates on criminals caught.

How could we improve our communication on social media?

Respondents most frequently highlighted the need to raise awareness of Bexley Police’s social media presence, suggesting more advertising and clearer information about where and when updates are available. Several respondents called for more regular and frequent updates, with some specifying daily or twice-daily posts.

There was also a strong emphasis on inclusivity and reaching those not active on social media, such as through council emails or printed newsletters for elderly residents.

Some respondents suggested practical improvements, like publishing ward panel meeting dates to boost attendance providing police training in social media use and ensuring prompt responses to calls and cases.

Overall, the main trends were a desire for greater visibility, more frequent and accessible updates, and broader communication channels beyond just social media.
